The stand there is hinged 2x4's used to hold the squeegee while working on it. They will be hung on the wall for the show. There are more in-progress pics on the link below.

At some point in the making of this the idea came up to to make a squeegee cozy with the same image, but pixelated in needlepoint. Dina embroidered the image and it came out pretty great. In the end we decided a crudely upholstered squeegee was just as funny, and a lot easier to make. Hehe Cheers Dina.

This print is a personal take on the history of Caffe Mediterraneum on Telegraph Ave. in Berkeley.

In addition to being the oldest coffeehouse in the East Bay and the birthplace of the Latte, The Med has a history of being a mecca for burgeoning Beatnicks, Hippies, Punks, Artists, Writers, Political Radicals.. a myriad of people who 'dropped out' of their set life path to become something more interesting. This piece is for these people who Washed Ashore in Berkeley over the last five decades.

I see the faces of the mural inside The Med as a set of gritty 'regulars' frozen in time. I imgine them witnessing Allen Ginsberg writing Howl in the summer of 1955. Later they watched as Lino Meiorin first refused, then capitulated and allowed Mike Nichols to bring his film crew in to film Dustin Hoffman for a scene of The Graduate in 1967.

This piece has the stark light of late afternoon, as these regulars are sitting, sipping and reading. The central figure is based on a woodcut by Lynd Ward from his graphic novel about a young artist called 'God's Man', which inspired Ginsberg in writing Howl. In the background to the left you can see a vintage AC Transit going by as a reference to the scene of the Graduate that was shot there. And the fishes below speak to the personal evolutions that began on these shores.

I was born in Central Kentucky and Washed Ashore here via Greyhound a few years ago...

This book comes from drawings made while traveling in Europe last summer. First in Denmark with family, which was very peaceful, and later while showing posters at Zstock in Tilburg and Flatstock in Hamburg. It was most fun showing the 3d posters. I like that people really stare into the drawings on the 3d prints ..and say oooh and ahhh! which is great.

When I got back home and began planning out a book of the sketchbook drawings, it made sensto make it a 3d book.

Click below for videos and process pics showing how the 3d is put together and very basic bookbinding.

This beat up sketchbook traveled many miles this summer..

At first thought, laying out the book on two 18 x 24 inch sections seemed like it would be about as much work as two 18 x 24 posters, but after I was into it a couple of weeks, it became obvious that it was closer to 10 posters worth of layout work.

Each level of depth in each panel consists of 3 or 4 photoshop layers, the last 2 being the red and blue line drawings that create the 3d effect.

Eventually all those layers get punched out, combined, and deleted until there are only four left, one for each color ink that will hit the paper. I send those files to Steve at D&L Printing who dead-eyes the color, prints them perfectly, and ships me the resulting bubble wrapped brick of fine printed material.

Print order: opaque tan - transparent green - red - blue

Putting the book together.

A couple pieces of are wood nailed together to make a V shaped jig to hold each book in place to awl the holes for the binding chord. The piece of chipboard is marked to indicate about where the 3 holes will be.

100 books signed, numbered and slid into archival sleeves (with 3d glasses & extra treats) ready to ship.
